Never mind Michael Jackson... Midnight from Crimson Glory passed away ;_;. He practically INVENTED progressive metal with his band. Without him, there may not have been a Dream Theater, Pain Of Salvation, Devin Townsend, etc.
Midnight was a great singer, who paved the way for vocalists like Queensrÿche's Geoff Tate and Dream Theater's James LaBrie, and one hell of a stage performer. He always wanted his band to stick out compared to the other progressive metal bands emerging in the scene, including having an idea to have all the band members wear elaborate Phantom Of The Opera-style masks on stage, and crafting a more mystical image for the band. The band only put out a few albums since their formation in 1981, and I still have yet to collect them all, but his loss is surely going to be felt across the progressive metal community.
